Analog… Analogue…

20 Feb

Started a little project last week, picked up a Reel to Reel tape machine TEAC (TASCAM) A-3300SX.

Well I thought that’s what it was but seems that someone had swapped the heads cover and is was actually the baby brother A-2300SX which was a bit sucky as I wanted something that could handle 10″ reels but it was cheapish and 7″ reels are probably fine for what I want.

Its really heavy probably due to the 3 separate motors. Direct drive which is good and also 3 seperate heads for erase play and record. The heads are in pretty nice condition and it seemed to work when we powered it on in the guys garage, but once I got it home and tested it properly a bunch of things were a bit dodgy, as to expected for a 40year old tape deck I guess.

Pulled it to bits and oiled the motors/Capstan etc cleaned the jacks and input/output potentiometers. The circuit boards were pretty old/dusty so gave them a good scrub sanded back and stained the wooden end caps. Spray painted a few of the metal parts, put it all back together  IMG_20150213_003708

Thought it was all good, and then the play button started playing up and eventually stopped working all together. So it came apart again and I had to replace all the old Capacitors on the power supply and relay boards  and clean a bunch of contacts. The tape counter also needed repair. I was able to order a new Capstan & counter belt from eBay which is impressive for an old machine and should hopefully fix the tape dragging a bit.

Had to made some Axial Caps from Radial ones, worked out pretty well. IMG_20150215_140636

Should be good to make mixtapes or use as a tape delay. But either way I think it looks pretty cool
